Maker of the Month - September 2023
Nicky Partridge - Tatting and Crochet work
Always keen on creating things from a young age, Nicky taught herself tatting in her teens from a book. She then stalled on this for a number of years and did cross stitch instead until inspired by the onset of YouTube, Pinterest and the work of individuals such as TotusMel on Etsy, and then hasn't looked back. Lots of balls of tatting threads from Roseground later she progressed to microcrochet, then normal crochet, and now has numerous balls of wool around too.
Lots of balls of tatting threads from Roseground later she progressed to microcrochet, then normal crochet, and now has numerous balls of wool around too. She does a bit of sewing machine work on occasion, origami, and silversmithing as taught by Julia Thompson in South Petherton.

Tatting and crochet remain the ones she does the most simply because they can be done as a passenger in a car or whilst watching the television.

Nicky's work can be found in the Carousel Shop so do pay a visit and check out her work.

Lucy Hawkins Artist & Silversmith
I find inspiration in the natural world and outdoors. This could be my garden which is left wild to encourage insects and birds. Also in the landscape of the Southwest, Somerset and West Penwith in Cornwall. I find sanctuary on the banks of the Parrett, walking at Lamberts Castle, our coastline, peaceful green lanes, hedgerows and fields.
The act of making art and responding to the landscape - immersion in observing, thinking and decision making is a place of sanctuary - you can only be in that moment. I tune in to notice the light on a hillside, breeze through leaves and grasses, hear the birds, the buzzards circling overhead, the quiet pop of a fish coming to the surface on the Parrett or waves breaking on the shore. I hope to create a sense of these places in my painting through colour and expressive mark making.

From coastal scenes to woodland streams, her artwork is informed by light, shape and colour. Acrylic paintings are often created within the landscape itself, bringing an immediacy to her work, with expressive monoprints completed in the studio.
Antonia trained in both Natural History Illustration and Fine Art and has worked with Dorset Wildlife Trust for over 30 years, producing illustrations and nature panels for the Trust’s reserves.

At Carousel you can select from greetings cards, coastal canvases, miniprints with an easel and the occasional monoprint.
